AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Award cites Company's contribution to the economic advancement of Asian Pacific Americans

The Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APACC) presented Chrysler Group LLC with its Corporation of the Year Award at APACC's eleventh annual dinner celebration Saturday evening in Rochester, Mich.

Chrysler Group received the award for its long history of work "in facilitating resourceful and financially sound business relationships among U.S. and Asian based companies and for the Company's devotion to the economic advancement of Asian Pacific Americans."

"Chrysler Group values diversity and inclusion throughout our enterprise," said Sig Huber, Director of Supplier Relations, Chrysler Group LLC, who accepted the award on behalf of the Company. "We are honored to receive this award, as it shows that our continuous efforts in embracing diversity are leading to positive economic outcomes in the community."

The APACC Corporation of the Year Award was determined by a variety of factors. In particular, Chrysler Group was honored for its participation in community activities, minority management and minority employment. According to APACC, Chrysler Group also has shown progress cultivating Asian Pacific American business and communities through purchases, meaningful referrals and mentorship.

Since 1983, Chrysler has purchased more than $45 billion from certified minority-owned suppliers and its commitment continues to grow. Earlier this month, the Company piloted a program in California that extends its best-practice Matchmaker supplier diversity purchasing program to help improve dealer purchasing from minority suppliers, as well.

"Chrysler Group has demonstrated extraordinary advocacy and support to APACC's mission," said Ron Shahani, Chairman and Board Director for APACC. "The Company continues to offer out-of-the- box programs that help to grow and develop Asian Pacific American businesses and communities."

Marchionne relishes No. 1 Chrysler minivan ranking

Minivan

Almost 30 years after the minivan was introduced, Chrysler Group LLC remains on top. Now, CEO Sergio Marchionne will have to decide how best to sustain the success.

So far, the moves made by Marchionne, who is preparing to merge Chrysler with majority owner Fiat SpA, have paid off. The choice he faces now: whether to merge Chrysler's two remaining minivans into one and whether to dramatically redesign one or both. Either way, Marchionne and his dealers are committed to Chrysler's signature product.

"I don't care if the minivan market shrinks as long as I'm King Kong in it," Chuck Eddy, a Chrysler dealer in Austintown, Ohio, said. "That is Chrysler's attitude, too. The minivan is here and the minivan won't ever go away."

Just four years after a 1979 government bailout, Chrysler Chief Executive Officer Lee Iacocca introduced the Dodge Caravan, and minivans soon joined Ram pickups and Jeep sport-utility vehicles as the company's most important product lines. To some extent, Chrysler created the minivan and the minivan saved the company.

Three decades later, Chrysler maintains its sales lead in minivans.

"When people think Chrysler, is minivan a product that comes to mind? The answer is 'absolutely,' " said Alexander Edwards, president of the automotive practice at San Diego-based Strategic Vision, a marketing and branding company. "Most everybody that is in the minivan segment recognizes Chrysler as the creator."

Chrysler has kept the title despite an onslaught of entries from Ford, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and General Motors Co. Ford and GM eventually quit the segment, and Chrysler has claimed at least 40 percent of the U.S. minivan market every year since 2007.

Marchionne is closing in on deciding whether Chrysler still needs two entries for the U.S. minivan market. He led a complete overhaul of Chrysler's lineup in the 19 months after its U.S.-backed bankruptcy in 2009, introducing 16 new or refreshed models. The revamp has led to 11 months of U.S. sales gains exceeding 20 percent and made Chrysler the biggest gainer of market share through April. Deliveries climbed 33 percent in the first four months, boosting market share by 2 percentage points to 11.6 percent.

With its minivans, the company is "studying all options," including eliminating one of its models and then broadening the target market for the other one, Saad Chehab, president of the Chrysler brand, said. Right now, the company aims to sell the Dodge Grand Caravan for less than $30,000 and its Chrysler Town & Country, which has more equipment standard, for more than $30,000.

Marchionne would have to decide which will survive.

Chrysler offers more-generous incentives on minivans than its competitors. The average incentive per Town & Country sold was $3,106 in March and $2,236 for Grand Caravan, compared to Sienna's $1,650 and Odyssey's $974, according to researcher Edmunds.com.

The Town & Country and Grand Caravan accounted for 15 percent of Chrysler's 1.37 million deliveries in the U.S. last year, according to Autodata Corp. Odyssey was 9.3 percent of Honda's sales; Toyota's Sienna was 6.8 percent of its total.

Chrysler pumps up numbers for Fiat

Once again, Chrysler Group LLC's strong financial performance is saving its Italian parent company, Fiat SpA, from one of the worst crises in its recent history, and Fiat says it will likely increase its stake soon.

When Fiat took over a bankrupt Chrysler as part of a 2009 bailout deal brokered by the U.S. government, analysts on both sides of the Atlantic worried the Auburn Hills automaker would drag it down. But with the release of both companies' first-quarter financial results last week, it is clearer than ever that Chrysler is the rising tide lifting both boats. Chrysler made $473 million — its largest quarterly profit in 13 years. Fiat posted a trading profit of $1.14 billion for the quarter, but said 77 percent of that came from the group's operations in North America.

In other words, Chrysler.

Fiat is still heavily dependent on its home market in Italy, and that market is in serious trouble. Consumers there, as in the rest of Europe, are holding off on big-ticket purchases as concern about the region's sovereign debt crisis grows. As a result, new-car registrations were down 18 percent in Italy year-over-year.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said auto sales in Italy have now sunk to levels not seen since 1983.

"There is a lot of uncertainty in the European market," he said during a conference call with investors and reporters last week. "(But) the group has sufficient liquidity to deal with the European downturn."

Wall Street has a taken a dim view of Fiat's performance. Last week, Standard & Poor's cut Fiat's credit rating to "BB-" from "BB," citing "weak European performance" and "rising consolidated net debt."

"We expect substantial excess mass market auto manufacturing capacity in Europe and weak demand in Fiat's Italian home market in 2012 to weigh on profitability and cash flow," S&P said in its note. S&P added that Fiat's decision to consolidate Chrysler's finances with its own caused its debt load to rise substantially, partly because of Chrysler's sizable unfunded pension liabilities.

Not that S&P was complaining about the move.

"Fiat benefits from the diversity that Chrysler's North American market position provides, as well as joint purchasing and shared investments," its analysts wrote.

But if Chrysler is saving Fiat financially, the Italian automaker is returning the favor on the product side of the equation.

The all-new 2013 Dodge Dart — the first fruit of their marriage — takes Chrysler's game to a whole new level, thanks to the refined Alfa Romeo platform it is built upon. For the first time in years, Chrysler will have a credible contender in the hotly contested compact car segment. And more vehicles based on the same Italian architecture will be launched next year.

"We continue to focus on new product development," Marchionne said, adding that 2013 will be "a big year" for Chrysler.

It is hardly surprising, then, that Fiat is looking to make the ties that bind it to Chrysler even stronger.

While Fiat already owns a majority stake in Chrysler, making its control of the company virtually unassailable, Marchionne has made no secret of the fact that he wants the whole thing. Unfortunately for him, he has been unable to agree on a price with the United Auto Workers-run trust fund that owns the rest of the company.

But the agreement Fiat reached with the Obama administration to take over Chrysler back in 2009 does provide some additional opportunities for Marchionne to increase its stake. And one of those windows is scheduled to open this summer.

Fiat has the right to purchase an additional 3.32 percent stake in Chrysler on July 1. Fiat now holds 58.5 percent of Chrysler.

"I think we need to take a very hard look at that call. I think there's a better than 50 percent chance that Fiat will, in fact, exercise that call when the time comes," Marchionne said. "And we have a series of calls that are accreting over time until 2016.

"It doesn't resolve the ultimate issue about the 100 percent ownership or the 100 percent integration of the two businesses, but it gets us through — in a very reasonable way — the next period of time, which I think will provide clarity vis-à-vis resolution of the European issue. Europe requires better clarity before I think we expose ourselves to anything else."

Chrysler U.S. sales soar 20% in April

Sales of Chrysler vehicles increased 20% in April as the automaker recorded its 25th straight month of year-over-year increases, while Ford said its sales declined 5% for the month and GM sales fell 8.2% from a year ago.

Chrysler is expected to have gained market share in April while Ford and GM may have lost market share as Toyota rebounded and Volkswagen gained ground.

Sales for Toyota, which was struggling to recover from Japan’s earthquake and tsunami a year ago, increased 11.6%, coming within 2,300 of equaling Ford as the second-highest selling automaker during the month.

“Toyota is hitting its stride with a new Camry and an expanded Prius lineup which is appealing to fuel price conscious consumers,” Edmunds.com senior analyst Jessica Caldwell said.

There were three fewer selling days in April 2012 than in April 2011, only the second time in the past 10 years that has occurred.

Several Chrysler models recorded their best April results ever or since 2008. They include the Fiat 500, Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan, Dodge Challenger muscle car and Jeep Wrangler SUV. Sales for the Dodge Avenger mid-size sedan increased 47%, its best month ever.

“This business is all about product and the quality and fuel efficiency of our current vehicle lineup has never been better, which is evident in our results,” Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales for Chrysler, said in a statement.

Chrysler

Ford's U.S. sales for April totaled 180,350, compared with 189,778 last year.

Sales of the Fusion mid-size sedan increased 2%, while sales of the Focus compact increased 12.5% compared with the same month last year. However, sales of Ford’s subcompact Fiesta dropped 43.9% and the Escape SUV, soon to replaced by a redesigned model, declined 20%.

Ken Czubay, Ford’s U.S. vice president of U.S. marketing sales and service, said customers are picking the Focus compact car over the Fiesta subcompact. Ford also is in the process of selling down its Ford Escape to make way for a new model and is increasing production of key models.

“We are eagerly looking forward to the increase in Focus production,” Czubay said.

At GM, Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet posted declines ranging from 8.4% at Chevrolet to 25% at Cadillac. GMC sales rose 4.5%.

Don Johnson, vice president for GM’s U.S. sales operations, said the company’s fleet sales declined 25% from a year earlier. Retail sales – those made directly to consumers by dealers – were flat with April 2011.

The silver lining is that sales of GM’s full-size pickups – Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra – rose 4.8% and 19.7% respectively.

Johnson said GM has raised its forecast for U.S. sales this year from between 13.5 million and 14 million to a range of 14 million to 14.5 million.

Volkswagen said its U.S. sales increased 31.5% in April, as it sold 37,525 cars and crossovers. The German automaker said the results were its best for April since 1971.

Toyota said its U.S. sales increased 11.6%, Nissan’s sales declined 0.3% Honda’s sales declined 2.2% and Hyundai’s sales increased 1%.

Toyota sold 178,044 cars and trucks in April as sales of its full-size Camry increased 20.9%. Prius sales, which now include three separate models, more than doubled to 25,168

Industry sales in April were expected to increase from a year ago because of declining unemployment, pent up demand, improving consumer confidence, unseasonably warm weather and strong fleet sales, even though overall economic growth slowed during the first three months of the year.

“Over time we believe that strength in the manufacturing sector and stronger retail sales will continue to lead to more job creation,” Johnson said. “That’s gong to help more consumers put the recession behind them, gain even more confidence and drive vehicle sales higher for both the industry and for GM this year.”

But when asked if GM is losing sales to competitors such as Chrysler, Toyota and Volkswagen – all of whom reported substantial sales increases despite having three fewer days to sell – Johnson said it would take more than one month’s data to know.

“There’s no doubt the Japanese are back in the market," he said. "They are being particularly aggressive in the fleet market."

The U.S. Commerce Department said Friday that the country’s economy expanded at an annual rate of 2.2% in the January-March quarter, compared with a 3% gain in the final quarter of 2011.

Still, consumers spent at the fastest pace in more than a year, driven in part by higher than expected auto sales.

"We can expect the auto sales rate to stay elevated through most of the rest of the year, even as downside risks — like political and fiscal uncertainty in the U.S. and slowing economies in Europe and China — continue to loom,” Edmunds.com chief economist Lacey Plache said in a report last week.

Edmunds.com last week increased its forecast for U.S. industry sales for the year to 14.4 million cars and trucks, up from 13.6 million.

“The momentum built by the recovering economy and compelling product choices in the first quarter continued to fuel new vehicle sales in April,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of market intelligence for TrueCar.com said last week in a report.
